DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES/ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

The Houston Parks and Recreation Department is dedicated to building a sustainable community and enhancing the quality of urban life by providing safe well-maintained parks and offering affordable programming for our community. To achieve this mission, HPARD is seeking Head Lifeguards (Seasonal) to join its Recreation and Wellness team.

The potential candidate(s) will play a key role in the following duties:

  • Observe and monitor the swimming activities and deck safety of the public to ensure adherence to safety precautions.

  • Enforce the pool facility rules.

  • Maintain and operate basic pool maintenance and water safety equipment such as vacuuming, brushing downsides, cleaning filters and setting up equipment (seats, ropes, umbrellas, rescue tubes, backboards, etc.).

  • Some equipment may weigh up to 80 pounds.

  • Check pool chemical readings on the PH balance and chlorine levels.

  • Perform basic housekeeping activities such as checking restrooms, offices, porches and swimming areas.

  • Complete a variety of forms, logs and timesheets.

  • Inspect the facility for hazardous conditions that may have occurred overnight.

  • Participate in special classes required for lifeguard training.

  • Must always be courteous and cooperative with the public at all times.

  • Must possess excellent swimming skills.

WORKING CONDITIONS

This position occasionally requires stooping or bending. Moderate to heavy lifting, up to 80 pounds or an equivalent weight may be required. This position may involve routine discomforts from exposure to moderate heat, cold, moisture and unpleasant air conditions. The position may involve routine exposure to soiled materials and light to hazardous chemical substances and cleaning solutions.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS

Must be able to read, write, add, subtract and follow oral and basic written instructions. Must have a basic knowledge of grammar, spelling and punctuation. May require a basic knowledge of a particular subject area.

EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS

Requires six (6) months of experience as a lifeguard or water safety instructor.

LICENSE REQUIREMENTS

Must be certified in Lifeguard Training or Water Safety Instruction and First Aid/CPR.

PREFERENCES

Selected applicants who already possess the required certification must be certified by a city-approved agency. Applicants who are not certified may receive certification through the Parks and Recreation Department at a low cost to the individual.

Preference shall be given to eligible veteran applicants provided such persons possess the qualifications necessary for competent discharge of the duties involved in the position applied for, such persons are among the most qualified candidates for the position, and all other factors in accordance with Executive Order 1-6.

SALARY INFORMATION

Factors used in determining the salary offered include the candidate's qualifications as well as the pay rates of other employees in this classification. The salary range is:

Pay Grade 9

INCENTIVE DETAILS

* $250 on first full two weeks of work after being hired. * $250 after completing last two weeks of work for the season.
