The Salvation Army Housing Specialist (Kingsboro MICA Shelter) in Brooklyn, New York

Overview

Kingsboro Men’s Shelter MICA Program is a 143-bed facility located at 681 Clarkson Avenue; Brooklyn NY where homeless men are provided with comprehensive services to facilitate their transition into a stable housing situation. The role of the Housing Specialist is to assist program participants to locate, secure and maintain appropriate permanent housing by ensuring clients apply for entitlements and complete the necessary evaluations for completion and submission of an appropriate housing package.

Responsibilities

  • To meet or exceed the quarterly housing placement targets as set annually by The Salvation Army leadership.

  • To abide by the requirements set forth in The Salvation Army Nondisclosure Agreement for Social Services Personnel.

  • Provide guidance, direction and supportive assistance to program participants and case management staff to complete the application process to facilitate permanent housing.

  • Review housing applications for accuracy and quality prior to submission to the approving agency as directed.

  • Accompany and transport program participants to housing interviews by use of agency vehicle or other appropriate means of transportation.

  • Develop and maintain a network of housing resources with city agencies, housing developers, realtors and community resources. Maintain a housing resource manual for program use.

  • Maintain up-to-date record keeping, statistics, and documentation of client progress in chart and any designated databases.

  • Facilitate weekly housing meetings with program participants to address housing readiness issues and provide information regarding the housing interview process.

Qualifications

  • S.W., BA/BS degree from an accredited college or actively pursuing a college degree from an accredited school with experience in working with clients who have lived in residential programs, or experience in working with a difficult to manage client population.

  • Strong communication, writing and computer skills.
