Summary:

Responsible for overseeing activities at swimming pool such as maintaining adequate control of participants to ensure safety, administering first aid when required, and maintaining pool sanitation. Available to work days, early mornings, late evenings and weekends, and must be able to work throughout the entire swim season with flexible hours.

  • Maintains constant surveillance of patrons in the facility; acts immediately and appropriately to secure safety of patrons in the event of emergency.
  • Provides emergency care and treatment as required until the arrival of emergency medical services.
  • Performing cardiopulmonary resuscitation for the professional rescuer (CPR/PR).
  • Automated External Defibrillation (AED) and Oxygen administration.
  • Presents professional appearance and attitude at all times, and maintains a high standard of customer service.
  • Performs various maintenance duties as directed to maintain a clean and safe facility. Performing procedures for a water emergency.
  • Activating an emergency action plan.
  • Caring for head, neck, and back injuries in the water and on land.
  • Communicating effectively, orally and in writing.
  • Establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with the public and department staff.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Required Knowledge and Skills:

  • Ability to react calmly and effectively in emergency situations.
  • Skill in the application of lifeguarding surveillance and rescue techniques.
  • Ability to pass a pre-employment physical skills evaluation as stipulated by the department.
  • Pool rules, policies, procedures and enforcement.
  • Preventing disease transmission.
  • Principles, practices, and concepts of basic first aid. Patron surveillance.

Education, Experience, and Certifications:

  • Must have or be able to obtain American Red Cross (ARC) Lifeguarding with CPR/AED for Professional Rescuers and First Aid.
  • Must be a minimum of 16 years of age or 15 years of age when school is not in session.

Environmental Factors and Conditions/Physical Requirements:

  • Work is performed in an outdoor environment, in and around an outdoor pool.
  • Will be subject to entering a pool, and swimming.
  • May be subject to bending, reaching, kneeling and lifting.
  • Will use lifeguard rescue tools.
  • On an as needed basis, employee may be required to remove an injured patron from the pool.

Equipment and Tools Utilized:

  • Equipment utilized includes standard lifeguard rescue tools.

Labor - Youth Employment - Hours Restrictions - Age Minimum:

  • 15 Years of Age:
    • When school is not in session or when the person is not enrolled in school:
      • Can work eight (8) hours per day for a total of forty (40) hours per week.
      • Cannot work before 6:00 a.m. or after 11:00 p.m.

Please Not : The Federal Child Labor Laws restrict anyone under 16 years of age from working past 7:00p.m. during the school year and 9:00p.m. during the summer months. They also cannot work before 7:00a.am. year-round.
